Building relationships with your people is the most valuable action you can take.

This week, make the time to get to know your people better. Create spaces in your diary to have some conversations with them which will build rapport.

This makes a big difference if you are to build together as a team.

All business is built on relationships – even virtual ones where the only connection between a vendor and customer is virtual.

For most of us, face to face relationships are the order of the day, yet we find it hard to spend enough time getting to know the people we work with and who are so valuable to the overall performance of the business.

Here are six things you can do to start this off, to great effect:-

1. Plan time in your diary to just ‘hang out’ with your people. Let conversations go their way, not yours – yet be relaxed about it.

2. Find something that interests each and every one of your people personally, and listen hard to what they say.

3. Ask more open questions (what, how, where, who, when, why etc.) about their interest – especially about what they have told you.

4. Hold off talking too much yourself – especially your own agenda.

5. Don’t be too preoccupied with ‘business only’. If you build a relationship about their interests first, the opportunity to make business discussions stick will be all the more easy.

6. It’s all about ‘Just Talking’ – remembering that the talking is not mostly done by you – but by them. And your job is to facilitate them.

Relationships are built to last this way – and from these relationships your opportunities to develop and grow comes.

How can you use effective communication skills to create a conversation that leads to more than small talk?

Everybody has had a conversation that seems more like an interrogation then a friendly exchange. Drilling questions at each other is not a good way to talk. You really are not learning anything, but rather just saying anything to keep the conversation going.

Worse than just asking constant conversations is answering a question and then asking it back of the other person. That shows zero creativity and can come off as insincere.

The whole idea to a good conversation is where all parties involved really care what the others have to say. Having effective communication skills can lead to an interesting conversation.

In order to move on form small talk and into a real conversation you need to understand how. You may start out with simple questions like, ‘What have you been up to?’ or ‘How is your family doing?’.

The idea is to take what you learn during this small talk and turn it into a conversation. The following list outlines how to do this.

1. Listen.

Really listen to what they say and how they answer your questions. If they seem hesitant in answering a question then that topic may be something they feel uncomfortable talking about.

If they seem to brighten up and really get excited about answering a question then this is where you can find something to talk more in depth about.

2. Body Language.

Watch the reactions you get from a person. If they have their arms crossed or are displaying a nervous habit then perhaps right now is not a good time to talk. You can ask or simply say you are sorry for taking their time.

You may actually find that conversation just makes them nervous or that they have something on their mind. In that case you can really open up a conversation if they want to talk.

3. Deal with questions.

If it seems questions are the main part of your conversation then it is up to you to turn this around. Answer a question with more detail that can lead into a good conversation.

Perhaps they ask about work, you can answer about work, but then lead into how you’d prefer to have more time for your hobby. This is a great way to make conversation.

4. End it.

If you really are not going anywhere just end the conversation politely. If you have something else to do or sense the other person has something to do then it is good to end the conversation.

There is no point in tying up time that can be better spent. You have actually laid the groundwork for your next conversation. The next time you speak with this person you can talk about what you had to rush off to do or ask how the rest of their day went.

These pointers are meant to give you a good idea of effective communication skills. Most small talk conversations seem overly polite and boring, so if you desire a better conversation use these tips to develop the small talk into a good conversation.

If you sell a product or service, and want to be successful quickly, you must tell people about it through advertising and marketing.

TV, radio and newspaper are still considered the major media for effective marketing off-line.

However, a lot has changed with these top three marketing vehicles in the past 15 years.

In this article some critical changes are revealed that have occurred and how you can get the maximum impact for your advertising dollar.

Television is primarily an entertainment medium. Research shows the average person spends more time with television than with radio and newspaper combined. For many years, TV was considered the most powerful advertising choice because of the huge audience it provided. Even today, nearly everyone watches some TV every day.

There are three things you must consider before spending money on TV advertising – limited lifespan of your ad, audience fragmentation, and ad avoidance.

Keep in mind that once your ad has aired, it is gone for good. There is no way your potential customer can refer back to it. This fact makes it imperative that you run your ad many times to embed your message in the mind of the viewer. Frequency is important with any advertising, but especially broadcast.

Audience fragmentation is one of the major problems local broadcast television faces today.

At one time, a huge TV audience was split over only a few local channels. Community businesses could reach a large majority of their potential customers very quickly. Large national companies, such as Coke, only had to choose from the three major networks – ABC, CBS or NBC – to reach over 80% of the population.

Today, with cable and satellite TV, this same audience is now fragmented over 200 or more channels. The percentage of viewers on local TV has dropped dramatically. Yes you can run ads on cable and they will spread them out over ten or more channels. This shotgun advertising has not worked well for small businesses because many of these stations have only a half percent or less of the total viewers. And, what are the odds that they will be watching during the 15 or 30 seconds that your ad is presented?

Ad avoidance is also a very rapidly growing problem for TV today.

Because the public watches TV primarily for entertainment, they see advertising as an unwelcome interruption – not unlike the hated telemarketing. This was true 30 years ago but there was nothing a person could do about it except channel surf or leave the room. As you know this was, and still is, often done. Today, with TIVO, pay-per-view, public broadcast stations, and the multitude of satellite and cable channels, the public has shown a willingness to pay for reduced interruption from advertising.

Radio has similar problems. It is also primarily an entertainment medium. As such, advertising is also considered an interruption. Satellite radio is one of the fastest growing industries today primarily because people, again, are willing to pay to avoid commercials. In fact, most new cars havesatellite radio built in.

Additionally, radio has evolved into an entertainment source for primarily driving, and background noise at work. If you buy any radio advertising, it should only be aired during drive time.

At home, radio use drops off. People can play CD’s or listen to satellite radio. This way they can choose exactly the music or programming they prefer without commercial interruption. The radio industry understands that folks do not want to be interrupted with advertising. Many times radio stations promote themselves by offering “more music, less commercials”.

Newspaperes have had their ups and downs, but have steadily maintained their local readership base and strength for local marketing. Even when radio, then TV, came on the scene, people still were loyal in reading their local newspaper.

Unlike TV and radio, advertising in a newspaper is not viewed as an interruption. In fact, one of the reasons people buy newspapers is for the advertisement content. Surveys have shown among 15% and 23% of those buying a newspaper do so primarily for the advertising.

You see, people do want to see and read advertisements. They do want to – and need to – buy products and services. They just want the ads on their terms.

TV’s best day of the year is Superbowl Sunday, delivering nearly 40% of U.S. households. In striking contrast, newspapers consistently deliver well over 50% of your community households. They do it every day, 365 days a year. Now that is some serious marketing power.

Another advantage over broadcast that only newspapers can deliver is engagement of the consumer at the moment they are making a buying decision. When a person is reading your ad, it is because they choose to. At that time you have their full and focused attention. And the working life of your newspaper ad is enormous because it is physical and static. Your potential customer can refer back to it anytime they wish, or even cut it out.

You may have heard on TV or radio that newspaper subscriptions and readership are dropping. This is true. But it is not to the degree they would like you to believe.

What they do not tell you is newspaper on line versions are growing much faster than the 7% or so losses in subscriptions. In fact, you will find newspaper web sites are usually the busiest web sites in any community. Be sure you take advantage of this.

Now you can see why today’s trend among business people who are in-the-know is away from broadcast and back into the old, reliable newspaper. Most all the major stores are getting back to the basics and finding the print advertising to be the best return on investment. So will you.

Newspapers, of course, should not be your only advertising medium, but it is the solid foundation on which you build an effective marketing plan in today’s environment.

One of the mediums of mass communication, radio, is a gadget, which is the wireless transmission of signals, modulated of electromagnetic waves, which has less frequency than that of light. In today’s world this radio has evolved into satellite radio (mainly an item of entertainment). Satellite Radio, which is also known as Pay Radio, Subscription radio, is a sort of digital radio, which is designed to receive signals, broadcasted by communication satellites. It has coverage of much wider geographical range, wider than other radio signals.

This type of radio is said to be using a band ranging from 1.4GHz to 2.3GHz in different places. It is said to transmit program-associated data abbreviated as PAD just like other radio services.Satellite Radio services is mostly commercial business body. They do not belong to private parties. SR services generally offer package of different channels, which requires subscription from the final users in order to get access to the channels. A monthly fee is charged for this subscription, which can be (according to American currency) in the area of $10. There are many providers of satellite radios in the world- SIRIUS, DELPHI, AUDIOVOX KENWOOD, PIONEER, etc. Among these the most noted and mainSatellite Radio providers are WorldSpace in Europe, Asia, and Africa; XM Radio and Sirius in America. But XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio are considered the giants in the market. Apart from music channels they also have news, weather and sports channel also.

In this respect one should also know that satellite radios are different from AM (radio using Amplitude Modulation for its broadcasting) and FM (a broadcasting technology in which a radio uses frequency modulation mainly for broadcasting hi-fi sound on radio). The main difference is that satellite radios have highest varieties of programming than AM or FM radios.

For satellite radios one will find several kinds of receivers and the total cost for the radio depends upon that. The different types of receivers available are- home, car, portable, and computer. But it is suggested that if one wants minimum expense with maximum utilization it is best to go for home as long as you do not buy a car.

Almost all the producers and Satellite Radio service providers have options for cars, boats, RVs and home. Many are also offering walkman type Satellite Radios.

If you are a road warrior a satellite radio is the best way to assure access to your favorite genre no matter where you travel.

Satellite radio is the latest trend in the world of radio entertainment. It is also known as subscription radio and pay radio. This is due to the fact that a paid subscription is required in order to access it. The reason for the paid subscription is because it has programs that are not offered by traditional AM and FM stations.

How Does Satellite Radio Work?

As the name implies, satellite radio uses satellites to send the programs to listeners. The radio signal goes from the earth-based stations to the space satellites, then back down to the radio receivers. The signals reach a much larger area than regular radio antennas. Satellite radio is now available to most of the world.

What is Needed to Listen to Satellite Radio?

To begin enjoying this service, you will need the actual satellite radio. This is also known as a receiver or tuner. An antenna is also required. You will need a subscription to one of the providers in order to get the programming on your receiver. Three such providers are:

WorldSpace-available in Europe, Asia and Africa.
XM Radio-available in North America.
Sirius-also available in North America.

Because the providers have exclusive rights to the individual radio signals that they send out, each has different hardware that pick up these individual signals. Each receiver has a Radio ID, or serial number. Once you have a subscription, you will get an activation code that will allow you to begin receiving the radio signals.

What Types of Satellite Radios are there?

There are three types of satellite radios to choose from. They are:

Dedicated car or home radio. As the names imply, the signal is picked up by your car or home stereo systems.

Plug and Play Radio. With this system you can listen to the radio in either your home or your car, with just one subscription.

Portable radio. This radio features a rechargeable battery. The antenna is built in and you can listen to it with headphones. You can take this type of radio wherever you go.

What are the Benefits of Satellite Radio?

The benefits of satellite radio are many. These include:

Clear, static free reception
It’s almost totally commercial free.
More than 100 programs that span different types of music.
Exclusive talk shows, news, sports, cultural and educational programs. From Howard Stern to Martha Stewart, there’s something for everyone.
The data transmitted includes the name and artist of songs and programs, as well as the channel. With this feature you can easily choose what you want to listen to.

Although some may question why they should pay for radio when they can listen to free FM and AM stations, more and more people are choosing satellite radio subscriptions. With so many choices of music and programs to listen to and the virtual commercial free environment, they consider it well worth the price.

Author: Marsha Friedman

As a national pr firm, we work with many types of media. But when it comes to talk radio we are specialists in helping our clients gain national recognition, sell books and popularize their causes. And our clients keep coming back for more national media attention. Fact is – talk radio may honestly be one of the best-kept national pr secrets there is. There are many reasons why this is true – but let me give you ten to start with:

1. THE RIGHT DEMOGRAPHICS. Every year Talkers Magazine does a research project to profile who’s listening to talk radio. And, every year their survey confirms that the talk radio listener is, “diverse, educated, attentive, active and affluent.” If this describes your book-buyer – it’s a perfect match!

2. TARGET AUDIENCE. Not only are the demographics of talk radio great – but with specialty talk shows on politics, health, relationships, lifestyles, finance, consumer advocacy, sports, etc., we can identify shows that are a perfect match for your books, once we know the audience you’re trying to reach!

3. EFFECTIVE SALES TOOL. Publicity is definitely not paid advertising. But it can be far more effective. Just ask Dr. Arnold Goldstein, well-known financial author, “The interest in our books from radio interviews has far exceeded the response we’ve seen from our advertising campaigns. Dollar-for-dollar, talk radio has shown a much better return!”

A compelling radio interview can sell your book without the audience even realizing they’ve been sold! And, as hosts don’t want to be bombarded with phone calls with questions about your book, they’re highly motivated to frequently mention your title so that listeners will remember it when they go to their local bookstore, or on Amazon.

4. THIRD PARTY ENDORSEMENT. Talk radio hosts have loyal followings – that’s how they maintain their ratings. And listeners tune in daily to hear what their favorite host is talking about. As that host is often thought of as an old friend or even a trusted advisor, when you appear as a guest on their show, listeners hear an implicit endorsement of you, your book and your message!

5. CREDIBILITY. This is a crucial ingredient in every marketing campaign – and talk radio supplies it in abundance. One of our clients told us, “every show I’ve appeared on – the host tells his listeners about my great expertise, my many accomplishments and how proud they are to have me as a guest! Of course, the more important I am, the more important the host appears to be. As far as promotion and credibility goes – it just doesn’t get any better!”

6. TIME TO TELL YOUR WHOLE STORY. As a guest – you get not just 60 seconds, but ten to sixty minutes of quality time with a very targeted and attentive audience. You have enough time to talk about your book and, in many cases, you have a chance to answer questions from callers. It’s a perfect way to get the full message of your book heard and understood by the masses!

7. COST EFFECTIVE PROMOTION. Talk radio interviews are all done by phone. So, without ever leaving your home or office, you can have a direct and oftentimes live conversation with consumers around the country.

8. IMMEDIATE EXPOSURE. You can be on the air within two to three weeks! And, because talk radio keeps up with changing times and topics, we can continuously create new angles for your topic that reflect current events, to keep you on the air and in the news on an ongoing basis.

9. BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK. With probably 1,000 + talk radio interviews under his belt, nutritional products spokesperson, Dr. W. Wong says, “Talk radio is the greatest way to get your message across to a large group of people at one time. There’s a captive audience during morning and evening drive times, in the middle of the day with stay-at-home moms and people in the workplace and for those folks awake late at night. It’s better, cheaper and faster than TV appearances. Without question, talk radio provides the best bang for the buck!”
